I Live Here: William Reagan

Name & Age: William Reagan, 44

Hometown: Bangor, Maine

Current Neighborhood: Kenton (actually Mock Crest, a little subset of Kenton)

How do you pay the rent and what is your slash? Corporate copywriter/creative non-fiction essayist (a.k.a. blogger)

What do you create? Little assemblages of words in various shapes and sizes, though usually smaller pieces because my attention span rivals that of a toddler. But I’ll stretch it out now and then and do longer pieces like haikus.

How did you land in Portland? I fell in love with a woman who fell in love with Portland, and I wanted to live where she lived. I still do. Fortunately, she fell in love with a fantastic city.

What is the last book you read? Flawed Dogs (the novel) by Berkeley Breathed, read with my daughter. His picture book/poetry version was great fun, but the novel surprised me with its wit, poignancy, and depth.

Name your favorite tattoo. The one encircling my wife’s arm. (Though the arm itself may be biasing that opinion.)

What was the last thing you ate at a food cart? A delicious pile of French fries, queso fresco, barbeque pork, and creamy chipotle sauce from Hog Time. I felt elated through most of it, though a bit sad when I got to the bottom.

Oregonian, Willamette Week, or Mercury? I don’t seek out any of these publications, but probably the Oregonian for the How We Live section (and despite John Canzano.)

What is your favorite bridge and why? It changes every few years, but I’m currently enamored of the vaulting grace of the Fremont. Its lines are simple and efficient, and I love the weave of on-ramps and off-ramps as seen from below on the east side.

Stumptown Coffee or _________? St. John’s Coffee Roasters. Stellar flavor, and I appreciate that my addiction is supporting a North Portland business.

Coast or Mountains? For one day, coast. For multiple days, mountains.

Only in Portland moment? Riding the Max with my young daughter during Santacon. I told her they were elves. She was skeptical. The Santa with the Blazers jersey didn’t help.

A favorite local business? Bernie’s Southern Bistro on NE Alberta. The savory food, sweet drinks, and charming owner make it consistently exceptional.

Are you a car person or a bike person? I’m a TriMet person. I love public transit – meeting neighbors, impromptu conversations with strangers, people-watching, all without having to stop at the gas station.

If you could change one thing about Portland, what would it be? I’d like less kvetching. (Yes, irony noted in this kvetch.) Portland has so many positives, yet I hear a lot of complaining about personal peccadilloes with the city. Portland isn’t perfect, and that’s fine with me – because it’s still pretty great.
