I Live Here: Bree Perry

I Live Here:PDX

Name & Age: I’m Bree.  Bree Perry.  And I’m 29.

Hometown: Brooklyn, New York.

Current Neighborhood: Richmond.  It’s my first time living in SE.  Always been a NE kinda lady.  Turns out SE is good stuff.

How do you pay the rent and what is your slash? I’m a professional seamstress. Just opened a Public Sewing House. And my slash? I’m a fashion blogger, and co-producer of an outdoor runway show scheduled for July.

What do you create? As of late I’ve been making women’s clothing.  I’ve been around a lot of super talented upcyclists recently and it’s really striking my fancy… teaching me to think outside of the box.

How did you land in Portland? I was making costumes for a Shakespearean Festival in Southern Utah. It was a freelance gig and once my contract was up I headed west. I had dated a someone here a decade earlier. Spent a lot of time here as a late teen and loved it. I knew I’d be back eventually.

What is the last book you read? Don’t Get Too Comfortable by David Rakoff

Name your favorite tattoo. Sewing tattoos. I’ve seen a lot of stitchers that get sewing machines, or thread… thimbles and buttons on their bodies.  I’m gearing up for a pair of sheers on my arm.

What was the last thing you ate at a food cart? Oh my gosh I’m so glad you’re asking… I had Awesome Cone last night for the first time. It was, in a word, Epic.  Tofu and veggies in a waffle cone?  Heaven.

Oregonian, Willamette Week, or Mercury? The Merc.

What is your favorite bridge and why? I don’t have one. Is that lame? I’m appreciative of all of them and yet, attached to none.

Stumptown Coffee or _________? PG Tips on my front porch.  English Breakfast tea with milk and sugar.  My mom’s from Liverpool… she taught me what’s up.

Coast or Mountains? Oh the Coast!  The thrift stores aren’t so picked over.  And they’re inexpensive.  There’s wardrobe gold in those shops!

Only in Portland moment? Mind my cheesiness but aren’t they all “Only in Portland” moments? That’s why we’re all here, no? Right here, right now, only in Portland, our culture is shifting… the food we eat, the art we make, our moral code. It’s exciting. That’s why I live here.

A favorite local business? Lyrik… it’s a coffee shop on 39th at Lincoln. Amazing owners, I’ve met so many people there that I now call friends.  The art shows they have there are just fantastic! They should probably charge me rent I’m there so much!

Are you a car person or a bike person? Bike, bike, bike!

If you could change one thing about Portland, what would it be? I’d make it closer to New York.  I miss my family… and the Met.

And finally, where can we find you on the web? My store’s website is BreedomPublicSewingHouse.com. I also blog for Portland Fashion Week at PortlandFashionWeekly.com
