Name & Age: Erin Wilson, 31
Hometown: My original hometown is Greensburg, PA.
Current Neighborhood: Technically, I live in the Richmond neighborhood. It’s so close to South Tabor though that sometimes I get to claim both.

How do you pay the rent and what is your slash? I work for Portland Store Fixtures and have for over 5 years. I don’t have a slash really. Rarely do I make money doing anything other than my day job.

What do you create? I create grocery lists, to do lists, dinners for myself and my husband, uncomfortable situations for myself, messes, and the occasional bit of creative writing.

How did you land in Portland? Right after we met, my husband and I started talking about moving to Portland. He had friends who lived here already and Long Island is really expensive to live on – that’s where we were living before moving here. I was in grad school, but I was going to have the option of finishing up from wherever so we packed up the car and headed out in September of 2006. Every second past Sandusky, Ohio was the furthest west we’d ever been.

What is the last book you read? Pride and Prejudice and Zombies the graphic novel. My husband bought it for me for Christmas. I’m a crazy reader though so this could have changed by this afternoon.

Name your favorite tattoo. My sister and I have matching star tattoos on the backs of our necks. I’m going to have an up-do for her wedding in May so it will definitely hang out. I love having it there.

What was the last thing you ate at a food cart? I think fried rice from Run Chicken Run at the pod at 50th and Division. Their fried rice is some of the best I’ve ever had.

Oregonian, Willamette Week, or Mercury? Willamette Week.

What is your favorite bridge and why? I really like the Broadway Bridge. I don’t drive over it very often (and therefore don’t have to sit and wait for it to go up or down which is probably why I like it), but it’s colorful and interesting and wide. It’s nice to drive across and nice to look at.

Stumptown Coffee or _________? Tea. I like coffee, but I love tea.

Coast or Mountains? Coast. I hate snow. I try not to hate a lot of things, but I really hate snow. It impedes my movement and makes me angry.  And, generally, the beach doesn’t get snow. That and the Oregon coast is completely beautiful.

Only in Portland moment? It’s a combination of moments actually. I love when people sing or dance to the music in their headphones at bus stops and on the street and while biking.  It cracks me up. The complete abandon, the complete disregard.  It always makes me wonder how they go about the rest of their lives. I saw a guy gettin’ down at the bus stop at Powell and 50th a couple weeks ago. It’s was pretty impressive.

A favorite local business? Portland Store Fixtures. But then I’m biased because I work there.  I also think it would be a conflict of interested to really tell you. I like all of the business owners of Portland because they keep me in the job and have for the over 5 years I’ve been with Portland Store Fixtures.

Are you a car person or a bike person? Car. I haven’t ridden a bike in years.

If you could change one thing about Portland, what would it be? Nothing.  This is the first place I’ve felt really at home in longer than I’d like this think about.  Quirks and all, I love Portland.

And finally, where can we find you on the web? The closest thing I have to a blog is the Portland Store Fixtures blog. I write a lot of content for work. And my husband took video of the ten minute play I wrote and directed for a 10 minute play festival last year. (The action starts at about one minute in.)

How do you pay the rent and what is your slash? I hate to say this living in Portland, but I make jewelry / I am a jeweler…. and that is how I pay my rent. I have a studio in Chinatown where I collaborate for The Opulent Project. We blur the lines between craft/art/concept and jewelry.

What do you create? Things that are metal, things that are plastic, things in the computer, things on my phone… garden, house plants, meals, cocktails, laughs and smiles.

How did you land in Portland? I am from Oregon and went to college in Eugene then followed the crowd (and my business partner) here in 2007!

What is the last book you read? I have a problem finishing books (or starting them), but the last one I finished was probably a year ago: On Ideology by Louis Althusser

Name your favorite tattoo. My boyfriend’s Transformers tattoo with the year 84 and a rainbow in bright colors across his chest. When I met him this was my indicator that he was completely nuts and that we would probably get along.

What was the last thing you ate at a food cart? Give Pizza a Chance

Oregonian, Willamette Week, or Mercury? Not really any

What is your favorite bridge and why? Fremont is my favorite one to look at because it drastically shifts depending on your view point – from the north, underside it looks like a confusing mess of knots with all the on and off ramps… and I really love that ramp that connects to nothing, like maybe something was planned, construction started and then it was abandoned halfway?

Stumptown Coffee or _________? yes, please

Coast or Mountains? Coast… my mom is a mermaid.

Only in Portland moment? Watching a movie at Laurelhurst and hearing a lot of noise outside…. then leaving the theater and realizing that it was the naked bike ride! So we grabbed another beer and cheers to that.

A favorite local business? Hand-Eye Supply… I like that they are not just a store, but are creating community design/craft/making/thinking. They support an interesting lecture series and have had all kinds of makers speak and connect…check it out: The Curiosity Club.

Are you a car person or a bike person? Car more than bike… and I’ll bus and carpool.

If you could change one thing about Portland, what would it be? I don’t really have the answer, but maybe something for mental health… maybe a big sister / little sister type program with hipsters and homeless? Just kidding.

Name & Age: Nick Fedoroff, 35
Hometown: Eagle River, AK
Current Neighborhood: Sellwood

How do you pay the rent and what is your slash? I’m a user experience designer at Webtrends, a downtown software company, which basically means I have Sharpie-stained fingers and get to drink beer at work /slash/ fiction writer/woodworker/distance runner.

What do you create? Original wood furniture, beautiful lies, apps that make you want to be a better person.

How did you land in Portland? I did undergrad at OSU, then graduate work in North Carolina and came back to Portland for a girl. She’s gone, but I love it here so much I decided to stay rather than go back to Alaska, where I grew up.

What is the last book you read? God Is Not Great, by Christopher Hitchens

Name your favorite tattoo. My favorite should probably be my own, the Japanese kanji symbol kawa, meaning river, which I got as a salute to my watery upbringing. But I once saw a woman with a blossoming plum branch across her back and shoulders that was absolutely beautiful.

What was the last thing you ate at a food cart? I think it was pad kee mao with tofu from I Like Thai on 10th and Alder.

Oregonian, Willamette Week, or Mercury? Mercury because they have it at La Sirenita II right by my house.

What is your favorite bridge and why? My favorite bridge doesn’t exist yet. I’m really excited for the new Sellwood bridge because I’ll be able to run over it without worrying about being pushed into traffic.

Stumptown Coffee or _________? Bertie Lou’s in Sellwood used to serve Mudd Works coffee which was my all-time fave.

Coast or Mountains? I love both of my parents equally.

Only in Portland moment? In the span of an hour, I once walked to a coffee shop from my office, finished a novel draft, and went to a beer festival. Pretty great.

A favorite local business? Golden Cabinet Herbal Pharmacy on 42nd and Hawthorne. They epitomize what a local business should be. Whether I’m getting an acupuncture treatment or picking up herbs, Ben and Casey are always happy to answer questions and make sure I’m satisfied before I leave. Business owners take note.

Are you a car person or a bike person? Bus person? Running shoes person? I should drive less, that much is true.

If you could change one thing about Portland, what would it be? I wish it was much, much more difficult for builders to get permission to cut down trees on lots where they’re building. My block has lost two gorgeous maples and two 100+-year-old sequoias because builders are trying to squeeze every inch out of the lots they buy. Portland’s beautiful trees are part of what makes it so great to live here.

Gabe Romero

Name & Age: Gabriel R. Romero, 26

Hometown: Nogales, AZ

Current Neighborhood: Sellwood

How do you pay the rent and what is your slash?  I work for a local community clinic that primarily serves those on the edges of society. I’m also a casino salsa enthusiast.

What do you create? I mostly create fantastical stories during “real time” conversations. Other than that, I enjoy creating pastel art, which generally has a heart theme somewhere in there. I would like to think that I am a somewhat serious writer, but most of my pieces remain unfinished.

How did you land in Portland? I was studying in a Catholic seminary about 45 minutes south of Portland. When I made the decision to leave after four years, Portland seemed like the logical choice.

What is the last book you read? Madame Bovary

Name your favorite tattoo. I have a co-worker with a tattoo of her family tree on her back. I have tattoo envy. Someday though, I would like to get a peacock tattoo. For ancient Christians, the peacock represented immortality and resurrection.

What was the last thing you ate at a food cart? A crêpe from that one cart on Hawthorne.

Oregonian, Willamette Week, or Mercury? Indifferent

What is your favorite bridge and why? The Hawthorne Bridge. To me, it is the most aesthetically pleasing to look at in Portland. I really like its functionality, plus you have a great view of the city when you walk on it.

Stumptown Coffee or _____ Townshend’s Tea!

Coast or Mountains? Both. I really like the feeling you get when you’re near/in the water, but there’s also something really majestic and beautiful about mountains.

Only in Portland moment? When I first moved here, I was walking outside of the downtown Whole Foods when this guy stopped me. He was obviously intoxicated and lost as he was from out of town. I decided to walk him to his bus stop so he could get to where he was going, and as he crossed the street to board his bus, he yelled back at me and blew me a two handed kiss. It was awesome.

A favorite local business? Los Gorditos. I consider it to be the only authentic Mexican resteraunt in Portland, and vegan!

Are you a car person or a bike person? Neither. Bus!

If you could change one thing about Portland, what would it be? If only there were fewer hipsters around….*sigh*

And finally, where can we find you on the web? Nowhere. Don’t even try it.

Name & Age:  Rhea DuMont, 28

Hometown:  Toledo, Ohio

Current Neighborhood:  Industrial SE

How do you pay the rent and what is your slash? I pay the rent as a Professional Coach working in higher ed with an amazing company. My slash is helping to run and facilitate a restorative justice based dialogue with Oregon inmates slash getting a book published on marginalized voices and perspectives in the field of Conflict Resolution slash trying to get the opportunity to teach another undergraduate level course, etcetera.

What do you create? I work to create a more just and inclusive world.

How did you land in Portland?  I was in SE Asia and followed a feeling to Portland. I am originally from Ohio and had no clue what Portland was all about. I had never been here, and did not know a single soul living here. That decision 10ish years ago was a great one and reminds me of the importance of listening to my intuition.

What is the last book you read?  Criminal Injustice and The Glass Castle.

Name your favorite tattoo.  I kind of know a boy who has this beautiful green flower tattoo on his neck. I like it. I also like my feathers that turn into ravens on my forearms/wrists, or anything by Guy Le Tatooer, yes!

What was the last thing you ate at a food cart?  A green smoothie from my fav lunchtime cart downtown.

Oregonian, Willamette Week, or Mercury?  The Mercury.

What is your favorite bridge and why?   The St. Johns Bridge is absolutely gorgeous, and it’s green. And well, I am bias to that.

Stumptown Coffee or _________?  Stumptown

Coast or Mountains?  I’d like them both, please. Thank you.

Only in Portland moment?  Person oh person, this is a difficult one. Aren’t most moments in Portland “only in Portland moments?”

A favorite local business?  Sloan Boutique– oh how I love you for your beauty and hate you for emptying out my pockets.

Are you a car person or a bike person?  I switched from bicycles to motorcycles. I highly recommend it.

If you could change one thing about Portland, what would it be?  We would always have a long summer and an autumn like this one, and every winter it would snow for just one week and the city would shut down every time, and we would join together in our neighborhoods to make ice skating rinks in each others backyards, and then we would eat soup and drink hot soynog with rum and fresh cinnamon and nutmeg and be happy.

Name & Age: Jessica Kimmet, 31

Hometown: Some small town in Montana

Current Neighborhood: Buckman

How do you pay the rent and what is your slash? Engineering and IT Recruiter/Silent Film Actress/Biblical Historian

What do you create? Funny facial expressions, films, quilts, clerical stoles (you know, the scarves that Ministers wear)

How did you land in Portland? I took a leap. Quit my job(s) in California, packed up my car and my cat and moved here without a job. Thanks to friends who helped me out until I was able to get my own place again!

What is the last book you read? “The Book Thief” by Markus Zusak I couldn’t put it down, for me it was one of those “stay up all night until I finish it even though I never want it to end” kind of books.

Name your favorite tattoo. I have none, but if I ever did get one, I would get the Goddess with the Universe in her belly symbol. A friend of mine in Graduate school had one like it and I’ve always thought it was a great reminder of the strength of women.

What was the last thing you ate at a food cart? A grilled cheese with tomatoes and bacon from Savor Soup House. It was delightful!

Oregonian, Willamette Week, or Mercury? I only read the Willamette Week and the Mercury on my lunch breaks during the summer when I can sit outside, and even then it is only for entertainment. I don’t really bother with newspapers because NPR is pretty
much always on wherever I go.

What is your favorite bridge and why? Why pick favorites? Love equally, I say.

Stumptown Coffee or _________? Townshend’s Tea (despite the great attempts by my co-worker to get me addicted, I’m just not much of a coffee person)

Coast or Mountains? Mountains. I’ve done some traveling in my life, but my favorite place in the world to date is Glacier National Park, Montana.

Only in Portland moment? Well, there’s the day at Powell’s when a guy who was hitting on me said that for work he “sits on his hands.” I’m still not sure what that means.

A favorite local business? Tango Berretin in SE. You really should try Tango, and please don’t tell me you have 2 left feet- that’s just impossible. Also, Blackbird Wine & Atomic Cheese because, well, wine and cheese get me high.

Are you a car person or a bike person? I’m so sorry. I really, really am, but the truth is, I love my car. I do own a bike, which gets utilized maybe 3-5 times per year. Again, I’m sorry.

If you could change one thing about Portland, what would it be? Well, since we’re on the topic of bikes, I would make bicyclists wear helmets. There. I said it. Hate me if you will, bikers. You all just make me super nervous.

Hi, I’m Evan and for a while I’m taking the reins of I Live Here: PDX. A few weeks ago I read that Erin and Sara were taking a break from this site. I’ve been a big fan of I Live Here: PDX and I was eager to see it continue. I emailed Erin and Sara about picking up where they left off. They happily agreed. So, with the help of a talented photographer and friend, Kim Oanh Nguyen, I’m going to do my best to keep I Live Here: PDX alive and vibrant. Stay tuned for new posts of interesting neighbors and maybe even a site redesign. And as always, if you’d like to be featured on the site or know someone who you think would be great, email us at iliveherepdx at gmail.com.

What do you create? I create aromatherapy hot/cold rice packs, art that mostly sees my walls, a supportive atmosphere for my clients and a loving home for my kitties. Oh, and a dance party whenever I can.

How did you land in Portland? Funny enough I heard that Portland was just like my college town (Iowa City, Iowa) but prettier. I got in my car with my pup and headed out west.

What is the last book you read? Spy Glass by Maria V. Snyder

Name your favorite tattoo. I would say it’s my ‘trust. faith.’ tattoo. I needed it to help me through a very difficult time in my life. It reminds me that eventually things change and evolve, even though it’s hard to see in the thick of it.

What was the last thing you ate at a food cart? Some sort of vegetarian tortilla bowl. Yum.

Oregonian, Willamette Week, or Mercury? The Willamette Week or Mercury. It depends on how edgy I’m feeling that week or by the cover story.

What is your favorite bridge and why? St. Johns. It is so powerful and majestic to me. I practically hold my breath every time I drive over it.

Stumptown Coffee or _________? Yerba Mate

Coast or Mountains? Both! I live here for the coast in the summer and the mountains in the winter. I also live here for the coast in the winter and the mountains in the summer! Aren’t we lucky???

Only in Portland moment? Only in Portland can I put out the glass recycling at any given time and have someone in front of my house within an hour taking the lucrative stuff.

A favorite local business? Bloom Natural Healthcare!

Are you a car person or a bike person? I’m a car person for functionality, but I love a good stroll on my cruiser in the summer.

How do you pay the rent and what is your slash? I represent modern designers of stationery and gift items in the wholesale market, through my small business, Crow and Canary (www.crowandcanary.com) /twitter prosthyletizer/puggle mama/eggs benedict connoisseur.

What do you create? A ruckus. Okay… and I also enable awesome designers to make a living off of the cool things they make. Not too shabby!

How did you land in Portland? The mister and I are were living in SE Alaska for several years and decided we needed to get back to the lower 48 (as the Alaskans say) and thought that Portland seemed like as good as any place to land. That was in 2004.

What is the last book you read? I finally finished Jonathan Franzen’s Freedom. I devoured the first 90%, but really didn’t want it to end so I’ve just gotten around to completing it.

Name your favorite tattoo. I’m afraid of commitment, so currently this clever design from Tatt.ly (http://tatt.ly/products/tattone)

What was the last thing you ate at a food cart? A waffle at Flavor – long live the Dutch taco!

Oregonian, Willamette Week, or Mercury? Uh… The New York Times (ducks and covers head)

What is your favorite bridge and why? It’s so hard to choose just one! Probably St. Johns since it’s so pretty to look at.

Stumptown Coffee or _________? Oregon Chai, not much of a coffee gal.

Coast or Mountains? Coast. There’s nothing like watching my pup frolicking on the beach.

Only in Portland moment? Getting caught in the traffic during the naked bike ride with my dad for 30 minutes. Thankfully, he’s pretty laid back.

A favorite local business? I love New Seasons Market! My visiting friends are always super impressed, as well.  And Bijou Café, I’ve been dining there for at least 15 years.

Are you a car person or a bike person? Primarily car, but I’m a fair-weather cyclist. I love my cute bicycle and it gets lavished with compliments when I’m out and about.

If you could change one thing about Portland, what would it be? Less distance from the East Coast.
