Name & Age: Vicki Abbott
Hometown: Los Angeles, California
Current Neighborhood: Richmond
How do you pay the rent and what is your slash? I’m retired, and I pay with my Social Security check. Since I’m retired, my “day job” is enjoying my retirement. Which I am, hugely. I do play a lot of Scrabble, both live and online. I also play pingpong, regularly, but not competitively. Before I retired, I was a medical transcriptionist for Legacy Hospitals for 23+ years.
What do you create? Lots of stuff. I love photography. I do a daily watercolor painting — right now, individual flowers – a vow I made on my 73rd birthday, I’m on volume 7 now. I also make one-of-a-kind decorator pillows.
How did you land in Portland? By car. I never meant to live in LA my whole life and when I was 38, I read about Portland and everything said to me, “This is the place”. I absolutely HATE hot weather and find rain exotic, so clearly this was meant to be.
What is the last book you read? Right now I’m reading “The Social Animal,” by David Brooks with my book group. I’m finding it unexpectedly interesting.
Name your favorite tattoo. Wrong generation. I have none, though my daughters each have one.
What was the last thing you ate at a food cart? Chicken pie at Pie Spot on Division.
Oregonian, Willamette Week, or Mercury? Oregonian, Willamette Week, New York Times too.
What is your favorite bridge and why? Fremont, best view. Well, Marquam, but I’m too busy watching traffic to watch view. And it’s a little scary.
Stumptown Coffee or _________? Stumptown is good.
Coast or Mountains? Both!
Only in Portland moment? Bicycle friendly streets, like Clinton.
A favorite local business? Café Pallino, where I go to read my NYTimes every morning. I love St. Jack’s, too.
Are you a car person or a bike person? I’m too old to bike but I respect bikers. I only wish they’d all follow traffic rules.
If you could change one thing about Portland, what would it be? I’ve thought and thought and really, there isn’t anything about Portland that I’d change. Well, I’d like less traffic.
