Name & Age: Joanie Quinn, 49 years and 240 days old… I know, 50’s coming, but I’m trying not to let myself know… it’s a surprise! Shhhh!
Hometown: Alhambra, California
Current Neighborhood: Multnomah Village
How do you pay the rent and what is your slash? I’m married to a bald doctor who will someday cure Alzheimers Disease and hopefully mention me during his Noble Prize acceptance speech. I’m a Foster-Adoptive/StayAtHome Mom of four fairly well-behaved (and thanks to me) therapy-bound children/Stand-Up Comedian/Professional Napper.
What do you create? “Controlled” chaos. I have a child in every category this year: a High Schooler, a Middle Schooler, an Elementary and a Leg Ornament (preschooler). My days are like playing Twister with a straight jacket on! The comedy material practically writes itself.
How did you land in Portland? The Mothership. No, really, my husband’s work brought me here – our honeymoon was driving up here – did you know that one inch on a map is really 10 hours of driving on the scenic 101 Hwy? That’s a lot of closed restaurants at the end of those scenes.
What is the last book you read? “The Help” by Kathryn Stockett. I thought it was going to tell me how to get help shuttling my kids around Portland.
Name your favorite tattoo. Temporary. That way I can change my mind a lot.
What was the last thing you ate at a food cart? A homemade artichoke and cheese tamale, a piece of fresh baked pizza, fresh blueberries – well, it was a Farmers Market on the Hill. A beautiful bounty.
Oregonian, Willamette Week, or Mercury? Oregonian – but only for the advice column and comics. Best parts of that paper, and I start the day laughing.
What is your favorite bridge and why? Southbound on the Marquam Bridge –at night because I love downtown lit. The city lights – not me.
Stumptown Coffee or _________? I am addicted to Starbucks. Feel free to send a pound or two. It helps me wake up from my daily nap. I don’t “LIVESTRONG”, I have four kids! I “LIVETIRED”!
Coast or Mountains? Coast! I love walking on the beach, all bundled up and semi-blowing away, rain misting on my face, sand on my lips. It reminds me of my storm chasing days.
Only in Portland moment? I saw a guy resting his casted broken leg on a skateboard as he pushed himself quickly along with his crutches. Only thing missing was his three-legged dog.
A favorite local business? Thinker Toys in Multnomah Village – you can get a great gift for a reasonable price at the very last minute for that birthday party you forgot all about that starts in a half hour – and they wrap it for you!
Are you a car person or a bike person? In Pretend Perfectland I am a colorful bike person, able to handle tough hills, wet weather, and a sore butt. Alas, here in Realityworld, I drive a sporty minivan filled with children of various bladder control who are MY pain in the butt.
If you could change one thing about Portland, what would it be? We need a public napping area in the summertime – in one of the parks, in the shade; a row of hammocks, someone playing soft, sleepy-type music, a cool breeze… and free childcare down the block.
And finally, where can we find you on the web? www.JoanieQuinn.com and www.LiveTired.net, and I’m a comic with timeoutcomedy.com
