Name & Age: Terry “Starbucker” St. Marie, 51
Hometown: Cudahy, Wisconsin
Current Neighborhood: West End, Downtown Portland
How do you pay the rent and what is your slash? I raise the rent money through my business consulting partnership with Liz Strauss, called Inside-Out Thinking (IOT). IOT includes our biannual live business event known as SOBCon, held in Chicago (in May) and here in Portland (in September). My slash right now is most certainly “entrepreneur”.
What do you create? My beloved blog, TerryStarbucker.com, has been my trusted creative outlet for the past 6 years.
How did you land in Portland? By choice - my wife and I fell in love with Portland about 4 years ago, and when the opportunity came to live anywhere, we chose here.
What is the last book you read? The Art of Nonconformity, by Chris Guillebeau
Name your favorite tattoo. A butterfly. Kind of a free spirit thing.
What was the last thing you ate at a food cart? Pad Thai, and it was awesome.
Oregonian, Willamette Week, or Mercury? Oregonian – I just have to have that traditional newspaper “feel” every morning.
What is your favorite bridge and why? The Ross Island Bridge, because of the awesome view of Mt. Hood I get every time I cross it.
Stumptown Coffee or _________? Um, I guess I should say Starbucks (my social media namesake), but I’ve grown to love many of the local brews.
Coast or Mountains? Mountains, no contest.
Only in Portland moment? Sitting here filling out this questionnaire at the one and only Backspace on 5th in Old Town. Geeky, funky, hip, cool, eclectic – and great coffee to boot.
A favorite local business? I love Theo’s sandwich place on 5th (in Old Town) – they have gluten free rolls (I’m on a GF diet), and they make awesome burgers.
Are you a car person or a bike person? Neither, I walk everywhere (and I have the worn shoes to prove it).
If you could change one thing about Portland, what would it be? Figure out a way to get more start-up businesses to blossom, because there is too much talent here to waste.
