I Live Here: Rebekah Leger

Name & Age: Rebekah Leger, 31

Hometown: Baton Rouge, Louisiana

Current Neighborhood: Sunnyside

How do you pay the rent and what is your slash? I stay at home with my three-year-old daughter and one-year-old son. So, I am a mother/entertainer/chauffer/cook/maid/errand-runner/nurturer/superstar. My husband is in his first year of teaching at a Montessori school. I will be following in his footsteps by getting my Montessori teaching diploma in 2012.

What do you create? I create delicious and nutritious meals for my family. I create a loving environment for my children to grow and thrive. I create opportunities for them to explore and enjoy this wonderful world. I also make delicious homemade beef jerky.

How did you land in Portland? We moved here (from New Orleans) a year ago for my husband to attend teacher training at Montessori Institute Northwest. We had heard such wonderful things about Portland that we took a risk and moved here without having visited. Well, we are in love. Portland, and probably Sunnyside, will be our home for many years to come, if not forever.

What is the last book you read? NurtureShock by Po Bronson and Ashley Merryman

Name your favorite tattoo. I only have one. It’s the letters “DMB” in a tribal font for, well, Dave Matthews Band, and it’s on my lower back. I got it when I was 20 years old and a Dave fanatic. I really do love it, even though I am no longer a groupie.

What was the last thing you ate at a food cart? I’m not sure…I have a lot of dietary restrictions so I just eat at home.

Oregonian, Willamette Week, or Mercury? How I would love to sit down and read a newspaper. No time for that with two small children to chase.

What is your favorite bridge and why? I love the Sauvie Island Bridge. It’s small and cute and it opens the door to fruit-picking adventures!

Stumptown Coffee or _________? I am not a coffee drinker at the moment. However, I enjoy the atmosphere of Common Grounds Coffee House on Hawthorne when I indulge in other coffee-shop treats.

Coast or Mountains? I love the coast. It’s nice that we can spend hours by the ocean without having to lather on sunscreen or worry about heat exhaustion.

Only in Portland moment? There’s a certain creativity that Portlanders use when naming their children. Don’t get me wrong, I love the boldness of child-naming here, but oftentimes when I hear a unique name, it makes me say to myself, “Wow, they named her that? Only in Portland.” And then I text my good friend, also from Louisiana, and we exchange “lol”s. We are going to start making a list of our favorites.

A favorite local business? Let me be completely honest. My favorite local business is my therapist, Lindsay McGrath. A year ago, I went through several huge life changes all at the same time. The result was crippling post-partum depression. Lindsay helped me put the pieces back together and I will be forever grateful to her.

And, although not a business, Baby Blues Connection (babybluesconnection.org) is a local, mom-to-mom support system that has a 24-hour message line, support groups, and resources for moms that are adjusting to having a new baby.  It’s important that new moms know that help is out there and they are not alone.

Are you a car person or a bike person? I am a car person. With two small children, it’s just easier for me. I really respect the parents who transport their children by bike.

If you could change one thing about Portland, what would it be? Could anyone convince my family to move here? Because that would be the only thing that could make Portland better for me. Most of them live in the South, and I miss them.

And finally, where can we find you on the web? My husband and I keep a family blog, Legers at Home. I like to call it my children’s online baby book, because I have been horrible at keeping a physical record of their milestones.
