Name: Matt Edlen
Current Neighborhood: West End
How do you pay the rent and what is your slash? Hrumph… I actually create the rent (sorry man)– but its totally not like that. I work for Gerding Edlen Development Company, our family’s ultra-sustainable development company. We actually lead the country in sustainable development with 40 LEED buildings built around the country.
I help run the Asset Management side of the company which may sound boring, but it’s a lot of fun getting to go around the country looking for opportunities to create new sustainable places as well as help those places become an awesome community.
My slashie award goes to photography/singing/directing/championeater (all one word). They keep me grounded.
What do you create? Place.
How did you land in Portland? Actually re-landed for me. Home grown, born and raised PDX-er with a heart for the big city. Moved to Chicago, spent time in New York, moved back to Portland to help start the asset management division of the family biz. Plus… I got hungry and where else to get a good meal but PDX!
What is the last book you read? I take full pride in saying that the book was entitled Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in preparation for the film (and yes it is a film) to be released.
Name your favorite tattoo. Thank you for assuming… Love you Portland for that. Underneath my suit and tie I have two though they are kind of one. Over my heart is my family crest (mom’s side) which has become a thing in our family to get. On my right shoulder blade is the letter E from the book of Kells for my dad. Family is pretty important to me.
Oregonian, Willamette Week, or Mercury? Oregonian at home. Willamette Week for a wait at the barbers / long streetcar ride.
What is your favorite bridge and why? Hands down best question. Love the St. Johns Bridge, though that is pretty typical. Actually my favorite is the vista bridge because of the view.
Stumptown Coffee or _________? There is something else than Stumptown? Kidding. Another fave is Courier Coffee. They buy from the farms in South America and then deliver it by bike. How cool is that?!
Coast or Mountains? Mountains.
Only in Portland moment? Bike and Brew. My buddies and I did an inner east side bar tour by bike that ended with a ride across the Hawthorne Bridge at 5 AM. We had our clothes on so we could have pushed the Portland envelope, but still…
A favorite local business? Bad question. Too many. Had to decide: New Seasons is on the short list.
Are you a car person or a bike person? Bike. I have two. If not bike. I walk.
If you could change one thing about Portland, what would it be? Thinking like a developer here… Reenergize the central city core is a huge bugaboo of mine. It’s so dead… we need to find a way to revitalize that. Same goes for old town and the inner east side.
There is so much opportunity to make those vibrant communities. We are working towards it.
