How do you pay the rent and what is your slash? I am an executive assistant at Vestas American Wind Technology, Inc / wannabe Genealogist.
What do you create? I guess I don’t create anything material right now. One day I would like to create connections between family members past and present but on paper and in family trees. I would like to start up with my calligraphy again and see where that leads me.
How did you land in Portland? Lost my job and was evicted all in the same day back in 1999 and we (my children and I) ended up moving down to Portland. Thankfully that bad experience turned into the best thing for us. My great-grandparents, grandparents, and many others settled here in NE Portland area in the late 1800s and early 1900s as well as in Silverton, so I feel my families “roots” are here and I truly feel Portland is my home. I have no intention of ever leaving.
What is the last book you read? Life is a Gift, Inspiration from the Soon Departed. A random book I picked up in a book store that details interviews with 104 hospice patients. You might think this would be a depressing read but those coming to the end of their life are very reflective and insightful, we can learn a lot about what is truly important from them. I found it comforting in many ways. We have so much to be thankful for.
Name your favorite tattoo. I have a couple, already but I am getting a 3rd that will remind me of my mother that has recently passed away. This one will be my favorite.
What was the last thing you ate at a food cart? I cannot remember the name, but it was yummy from the Portland Soup Company at SW 4th & College. Everything is good there!!
Oregonian, Willamette Week, or Mercury? None of the above. I catch my news online and only if it catches my eye.
What is your favorite bridge and why? The Hawthorne Bridge. I love the walk across it, the sounds of the cars when they drive across and the view I have from it when I watch my daughter’s team during the dragon boat races.
Stumptown Coffee or _________? Stumptown, but sadly there isn’t one near my office or near where I live.
Coast or Mountains? I never learned to ski and not really a snow person, but I love the views of the mountains from the city on a clear day, and I do like to take day trips out to them and hiking. I love our beaches and coastline for the same reasons. I can’t choose; I love them both.
Only in Portland moment? Almost getting hit by a bicyclist who didn’t stop at a stop sign or yield to my girlfriend and I crossing the street on foot. I am sure this happens everywhere, but for a city (and bicyclists) so up in arms about sharing the road this really got to me. We talked about it for days.
Are you a car person or a bike person? Neither, sold the car over a year ago and don’t miss it. We ride the streetcar mostly since we work and my daughter goes to school downtown. Or we are on foot. On occasion a Zipcar is used.
If you could change one thing about Portland, what would it be? I wish the city would put more emphasis on helping the organizations the homeless. I am happy to see more transitional housing projects going up, but I don’t understand why we are putting money into a streetcar line to the east side when we have buses that already run that same route. However, I realize there is more to all of this and many sides of discussion.
And finally, where can we find you on the web? I live Here: PDX and on Facebook
