Name & Age: Robin Carlisle, 30
Hometown: Santa Cruz, Ca.
Current Neighborhood: SE por vida!
How do you pay the rent and what is your slash? I style hair out of a vintage travel trailer in southeast and I make art of all kinds out of my home studio.
What do you create? Beauty mostly, out of anything, painting, sewing, Hair dos, laughter! I am girly and syrupy and I like to enjoy life and the art I make usually communicates that. Oh, and I make huge messes. But those are usually in an attempt at the beauty.
How did you land in Portland? I am here again actually. The first time there was a boy involved… I followed him here, then I ran away to Brooklyn, He followed me there, then we both decided to meet back where we started, Santa Cruz. We got back there then finally… Broke up. I met my now husband there, who is actually from the Midwest but always wanted to come to Portland and I pretty much never really wanted to leave… So we came here together in 2005.
What is the last book you read? Shamanic Breath Work, By Lynda Star Wolf. I pretty much always have a rad, hippy, dirt witch, book dog eared in my totally not hippy, dirt witch, over sized handbag… I kind of love learning new ways to acknowledge your spirit and recognize your heart. It is really important layer of who I am.
Name your favorite tattoo. I would like to say that it is mine but that is not so much true.
What was the last thing you ate at a food cart? Some scraps of my four-year old’s “kindergartner” from the Grilled Cheese Grill, the new one on SE 28th.
Oregonian, Willamette Week, or Mercury? WW… I think?
What is your favorite bridge and why? That is a hard one… I like a lot of them for different reasons, but if I am being practical, which I never usually am, but let’s try that for a change, I would have to say the Morrison… because I think that is it very useful.
Stumptown Coffee or BUST!
Coast or Mountains? I would say both but growing up in a little beach town I think I am required to say coast… Besides that, it is always my fantasy answer when the today show asks me how I live to be 105, I say, “I jump in the pacific ocean every morning!”… I should probably start doing that one of these days.
Only in Portland moment? It snowed 2 inches and the whole city shut down and we played snow ball fights in the streets with strangers.
Are you a car person or bike person? Old red Volvo station wagon.
If you could change one thing about Portland, what would it be? I hate to say it but the rain… Not all together, but I could dismiss like half of it and I think this place might be paradise.
Tell us a story about Portland and you. Are you sure you want to hear this? It’s a love story… I am pretty sure my actual heart has turned bright green because of my love for this place… There are so many stories! Learned how to drop in on a ramp at Burnside. Sold my first painting on Alberta St. Let’s see, bike riding trough the pouring rain in a slip dress. Belle & Sebastian on the night of 911, they covered Imagine. Looking for myself in the “i saw you’s”. Watching fireworks from the tippy top tower of the old B&O building. Front porches and back yards. Life in Portland is just unlike anywhere else. But the biggest story of all, for me, is my son, he was born here. And that, for our family, really makes this place home… Yikes! Did I get too gushy on you? I have a tendency towards that.
And finally, where can we find you on the web?
