How do you pay the rent and what is your slash? I am an improv consultant/artist: I run a business that uses the tools and practices from improv theater to help businesses communicate, create, and relate…all while have a ridiculously good time. At the same time I am a painter and illustrator best know for the giant fish that the city commissioned that hang from the 3rd and Morrison Parking garage.
What do you create? Stories: mostly on stage as an improv performer, but also through images with a pen and brush…lately I have been creating an army of mini domino robots (see http://www.botjoy.com )
How did you land in Portland? True story – my mom was living in Cleveland and wanted to move her business to the Pacific NW so she threw a dart at a map. It landed a wee bit south of Olympia, after coming out here with her, we landed on Portland (instead of Centralia, which was where the dart hit).
What is the last book you read? Daniel H. Wilson’s Robopocalyse
Name your favorite tattoo. The snake skull dark mark that the Death Eaters have on their inside forearm in Harry Potter
What was the last thing you ate at a food cart? Inari from Zenbu cart in Sellwood
Oregonian, Willamette Week, or Mercury? WWeek, the editor is my neighbor
What is your favorite bridge and why? The Sellwood Bridge..you take your life into your own hands at every crossing…my son and I and have a debate: if it collapsed should we keep the windows open or closed when we hit the water?
Stumptown Coffee or _________? Schondecken
Coast or Mountains? Coast
Only in Portland moment? I was walking downtown having just arrived in Portland when someone came out of a gallery on 1st Ave and asked me where I had gotten my t-shirt (it was a hand painted creation that I had made). An hour later, I had spread 2 un-stretched canvases on the floor of his gallery and he had offered me a one man show…. Only in Portland.
A favorite local business? Jade Tea House in Sellwood…we live there!
Are you a car person or a bike person? Probably car…but I hate to admit it
If you could change one thing about Portland, what would it be? I love Portland but have an East Coast mentality which often leaves me feeling that Portlanders can be slow and passive aggressive. I come across as pushy and loud…which I am…but somehow we all get along…as far as I know…..
