I Live Here: Sareena Nunez

Name & Age: Sareena Nunez, 33

Hometown: I’m a native-born in Astoria and raised in Portland

Current Neighborhood: South Irvington. No seriously, one of the moms at my kids’ school told us that the part of our ‘hood that was closer to Lloyd Center was South Irvington, as if the proximity to the mall and MAX line made us like 8 Mile or something.

How do you pay the rent and what is your slash? Well, my husband pays the rent and I pay for our Blazers season tickets. I work part-time as a legal assistant and my slashes are Mother Of The Year/It Girl/Ms. Oregon Kickball (I have a trophy!)

What do you create? Laughter, amazing mimosas and sangria. Sorry Portland Etsy crowd, I neither knit nor craft.

How did you land in Portland? Courtesy of my parentals, Bob & Sue. I had brief flings with Washington & upstate New York and slummed it for 6 months in Texas, but you can’t keep an Oregon girl away!

What is the last book you read? “Why Buffy Matters: The Art of Buffy the Vampire Slayer”. Joss Whedon is my homeboy.

Name your favorite tattoo. My husband’s. It’s the mother/child portion of Gustav Klimt’s The Three Ages of Women done by our friend Alice Kendall of Infinity Tattoo.

What was the last thing you ate at a food cart? Trial By Fire at Brunch Box. I will cry if they ever shut down.

Oregonian, Willamette Week, or Mercury? The Merc, usually. The Oregonian is dead to me.

What is your favorite bridge and why? I love the Broadway. The color, the proximity to the Rose Garden, the exhilaration from walking across that high up…plus, I remember my husband kissing me in the rain very early on in our relationship on that bridge. Good stuff.

Stumptown Coffee or _________? I’m old school Portland, give me Kobos Coffee Black & White blend.

Coast or Mountains? Coast. I appreciate the beauty of the mountain, but I don’t ski or snowboard. Give me sand and surf!

Only in Portland moment? Well, maybe not an only in PDX moment, but certainly a uniquely and quintessential PDX moment…my husband and I met at Starbucks. He worked at the store on 4th & Oak and I lived in the building above. One day, I was waiting in line to order and he acknowledged me from the espresso bar and identified me by my usual drink order, which surprised me because I hadn’t really noticed him before. I was flattered nonetheless and over the next couple weeks we eased into a flirtation and discovered we both owned ferrets, and really, how many people do you know that own a ferret? 12 years and two kids later, we’re still here.

A favorite local business? Grand Central Bakery, Recesstime Sports League, Sokol Blosser Winery.

Are you a car person or a bike person? I am an avid pedestrian. Our family has been car-free for 5 years and use Tri-Met, ZipCar, our bikes, our feet and the occasional cab to get around.

If you could change one thing about Portland, what would it be? The school system. Growing up here, you went to your neighborhood school. In high school, you could apply for specialty magnet programs but none of this nonsense of people lottery-ing their kids into other schools in Kindergarten. Re-invest in your neighborhood and give your school a chance! A little diversity never hurt and your child will rise to the occasion.
